Buying a gaming PC: what to look for

You usually buy a gaming PC for a few years, so it helps to know which parts make the difference. These are the points that matter most for a gaming PC or gaming computer.

The graphics card. For games, the graphics card (GPU) does most to decide how smoothly a game runs and at which resolution and settings you play. If you know your resolution, for example 1080p or 1440p, pick a suitable graphics card first and look at the rest after that.

The processor. The processor (CPU) matters most in games with a lot of calculation, such as strategy and simulation games, and when you stream at the same time. A fast processor next to a slow graphics card adds little in most games.

Memory. 16 GB is common in a gaming PC. Many people choose 32 GB when they also stream, edit video or keep many programs open at once.

Storage. An SSD loads games much faster than a hard drive. Games take up a lot of space, so check the capacity and whether there is room for a second drive.

Ready-built or build your own. A ready-built gaming PC works straight away and has a warranty on the whole machine. Building your own gives more choice per part, but takes time and know-how.

Room to upgrade. Check whether the power supply has enough headroom for a heavier graphics card later, and whether one fits in the case.

Cooling and noise. Good cooling keeps the PC quieter and stops parts from slowing down when they get too hot. If noise matters to you, read reviews.
